Recess: The Heartbeat of Black Nightlife in London & Recessland 2026
11 April 2026
If you've been anywhere near Black nightlife in London over the last decade, you already know the name. Recess — or @re.cess as they're known on Instagram — is one of the most important Black nightlife brands in the UK, and in 2026 they're taking things to a whole new level with Recessland, a two-day outdoor festival at Dreamland in Margate on 23–24 May 2026.
What Is Recess?
Recess was born in the strobe-lit basement of East London's Ace Hotel (now One Hundred Shoreditch), founded by brothers Jojo and David Sonubi. What started as a party of 70 friends quickly became a full-blown movement. Six years, 20 team members, and almost 80 parties later, Recess is now the bedrock of Black London's nightlife scene — operating out of its HQ in Tottenham and pulling in well over 1,000 partygoers per event.
The sound? Everything you need in one room: Hip hop, R&B, Afrobeats, Dancehall, Amapiano, and Bashment. No gimmicks, no compromise — just a crowd that gets it and DJs who live it.
Recess is also more than just a party. During the COVID lockdowns of 2020, Jojo Sonubi launched the now-legendary NS10v10 DJ battles via Instagram Live — pulling in over 20,000 viewers and giving birth to No Signal, the Black British radio station that now has listeners in more than 90 countries. Recess and culture-building are inseparable.
What to Expect at a Recess Event
Walk into a Recess party and you'll feel the difference immediately. This is a space made by Black people, for Black people — and that intentionality shows in every detail, from the music selection to the crowd energy.
Day parties and night parties rotate throughout the year across London venues. Dress code is typically casual to smart-casual: come as you are, bring your crew, and expect to dance. Recess events are announced on set dates, so you'll need to follow @re.cess on Instagram to catch the next drop.
The brand has also expanded internationally — including collaborations in Amsterdam — cementing Recess as not just a London thing but a genuine cultural export.
Recessland 2026 — The Big One
Recessland 2026 is where the brand goes full festival. On 23–24 May 2026, Recess takes over the iconic Dreamland amusement park in Margate for a two-day outdoor experience unlike anything in the UK Black nightlife calendar.
The lineup is stacked:
- Destin Conrad — the R&B artist who's been on everyone's radar
- Sarz — the legendary producer behind some of Afrobeats' biggest records
- Tyler ICU — Amapiano's finest bringing the South African sound to Margate
- R2Bees — Ghanaian duo and Afrobeats legends
- JELEEL! — the high-energy performer taking over everywhere right now
- Plus: Ella DHC, SHIIVA, Uncool MC, Mavo, Crazy Couzins, DJ Emz, and many more
It's a 21+ event with no re-entry, so plan accordingly — arrive ready to stay for the full experience.
